On July 1, 2025, a new law will go into effect in North Carolina increasing the minimum amount of liability insurance limits that drivers must carry.
If you are found responsible for a motor vehicle accident, liability insurance coverage should cover some or all of the other person’s medical expenses, and damage to the other person’s car or property. It also may cover legal costs for lawsuits filed against you.
Liability insurance already is mandatory in North Carolina. The minimum liability limits – the lowest amount of coverage a person must carry to legally drive – is determined by the state. This is where the new legislation comes into play. Under the updated law, the minimum auto insurance liability limits will be as follows:
- $50,000 for bodily injury of one person (up from $30,000)
- $100,000 for bodily injury involving two or more people (up from $60,000)
- $50,000 for property damage (up from $25,000)
Once these changes go into effect, North Carolina will have some of the strictest minimum liability coverage requirements in the county. As a result, victims of car crashes will be able to collect much more money from at-fault parties than was previously allowed.
